The European and Australian dryland scenes are going to face a serious challenge with the explosion of races here in North America. With the poor snow conditions of the past few seasons, serious sled-dog racers are now looking to the dryland scene to reach new levels of professional competition. Already the U.S. and Canadian racing associations are providing top-quality races in a number of states and provinces. This year, the fall line up will include the following classes:
Canicross is a time trial where a human runner with one sled dog pulling in harness runs a cross-country course. Bikejoring involves a mountain-bike rider and one or two sled dogs that pull throughout the race. This is a very fast-paced race that challenges human and canine athletes to stay on course and perform at high speeds.
Rig Racing (Rig: three- or four-wheeled cart) is a sport where the driver is pulled by a dog team ranging from 4 to 8 dogs. This class is comprised of Pro and Amateur divisions where teams must qualify by proving ability through their performance.
